Meet Wayne Chang: Minimally Invasive Surgeon and Hernia Specialist

Dr. Chang is a board-certified fellowship trained general surgeon practicing in Camp Hill, PA. He has a strong interest in robotic surgery and complex hernias. He started his surgical training at the University of Kentucky, where he was first immersed in abdominal wall reconstruction. He then completed an additional year of training at Anne Arundel Medical Center, specializing in minimally invasive hernia repairs. As a native of Maryland, he now calls Central PA home along with his wife and three daughters.

When it comes to hernias, there is no "one-size-fits-all" repair. Therefore, each patient is carefully evaluated and given a personalized experience. No individual should be forced to live with a hernia, and he welcomes patients who seek a second opinion or those who have been told they are not candidates for surgery. Dr. Chang is currently a clinical assistant professor at the Penn State School of Medicine and practices at Holy Spirit Medical Center and Hampden Medical Center.

Clinical Expertise

Dedicated Hernia Practice

Dr. Chang is fellowship-trained in abdominal wall reconstruction. Having a practice focused on hernias gives patients the confidence and comfort of knowing their surgeon is providing high-quality care. He offers mesh and non-mesh approachesĀ

Complex Hernia Repairs

Hernias come in all shapes and sizes. When one or multiple attempts to fix a hernia have failed, seeing a hernia specialist gives you the best chance of having a durable repair. A surgeon should be able to walk you through their decision-making and take the time to ensure you know your options.

Robotic Surgery

Dr. Chang is proficient in robotic surgery and has performed over 1,000 robotic cases in his career. He will aggressively pursue minimally invasive approaches for challenging cases when safe to do so. Giving patients the option of minimally invasive surgery allows them to speed up their recovery and minimize their downtime.

Education & Quality Improvement

Active involvement with surgical education and training future hernia specialists. He is also involved with national societies and quality initiatives to advance hernia care and improve patient outcomes.

Expanded surgical candidates

Open operations are strict in patient selection based on tobacco use and weight. Robotic operations are influenced less by those factors.Ā

Lower infection risk

The body can heal smaller incisions more quickly, which leads to a lower incidence of surgical site infections

Less pain

Smaller incisions translate to less pain in spite of the similar work being done with an open operation

Faster recovery

The best place for patients to recover is being at home and performing their daily activities.Ā

Less time spent in the hospital

Patients will stay on average of 1-2 days in the hospital compared to 3-7 days for open operations
